Update Jeppesen

Apparently (to be confirmed), the B767 guys on our course say that you only carry the charts for the destinations your headed to. Most of the Jepps we received are enroute charts. The EFB has Jepps but latest rumour is that we will use iPads for Jepps starting July 1. Can’t wait….

Standard

Ground School

The course got real busy and I was short on time with updates. I am now done.

As for ground school… Let me summarize. Get your CBT done prior to arrival. This is not an option. If you can get the 100 questions SKV done – great. If not, do not spend the first few days of your ground school’s time off to do this exam. You are wasting valuable time. The company is not keen on you knowing the systems in depth until well after you have graduated from the course. The goal of ground school is to know your ramp check – That is it. Practice as much as you can during all the time off you have – find a mock up in a class room or if one is available, sit in the real thing, the EIPT. I drove one night to the training centre and spent 2-3 hours by myself and it was the best thing I did. As for the I will you will, you don’t need to know them until later in the second week. You can start learning them but once again, Ramp Check should be your primary focus – I mean 95% of your time.

Standard

Systems Knowledge Validation SKV

There is a 100 questions open book exam on AOM Vol 1 & 2. To get to it, type SKV in acaeronet’s search box in the top right corner. If you don’t complete it by the time you start your course, don’t do it during your first week. What you want to do during every minute you have off during your first week is practice your ramp to ramp and learn it by heart. The I WILL YOU WILL can wait until week 2.

Standard

Cockpit Poster

Arriving from the Airbus means that you’ll have to learn new acronyms – new words to describe the various instruments on the flight deck. I would highly suggest you ask Flight Ops for the poster of the Cockpit so you can put it on a wall in your office and put Post-Its with the acronyms on the appropriate instrument while doing your Computer Based Training. If you live in Montreal, ask that it be shipped to Nicole.

AIR CANADA FLIGHT OPERATIONS TRAINING

Welcome to Flight Operations Training. This information package has been developed to provide you with information and references designed to make your training successful. We hope that you will enjoy your course. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns that you may have.

TRAINING MATERIAL

The Flight Operations Digital Data (FODD) is in CD format and Web FODD. This contains all aircraft type AOM’s and we encourage their use. The B787 has the documents online in FLIGHTBRIEF under All Documents  B787. The B787 crews will have their iPad issued prior to their Transition courses as per SYS Bulletin SYS:02-14 YYZ P-EFB Distribution Sign Up. You will receive your new aircraft SOPs, the QRH, a cockpit layout and as well as additional aircraft specific publications. These will be available as much as 30 days prior to your course date. Please make arrangements to pick them up from the Training Center or if you wish, arrangements can be made to have them sent to your mail folder in Flight Operations. Please contact the Senior Ground School Instructor at 905-676-4427 to request training material.

Prior to attendance in ground school, any time spent familiarizing yourself with the cockpit layout, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) in Volume I, Chapter 4, and the “I Will, You Wills”, would be time well spent and will reduce your workload while in attendance on course.

Your Fleet specific System CBT Modules (Computer Based Training) can only be accessed and completed from within the LMS. If you do not have access to a computer, we have CBT rooms in both YYZ and YVR which are readily available at your disposal. Please review the next section, AC LMS, for further details on your System CBT Modules.

Systems information on your respective aircraft is found in Volume 2 of the AOM. For those who may prefer a paper copy of Volume I and 2 of the manual, you must fill out a blue form (ACF464-B), which is available from your base coordinator. Indicate the requested Volumes of your respective AOM and forward the blue form to Printing.

NOTE: ALLOW UP TO 3 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.

As a reminder, all pilots must be fully conversant with policies & procedures as outlined in the FOM, particularly Chapters 3 and 6. Any specific issues pertaining to aircraft procedures will be clarified by your instructor. As well, it would be useful to obtain up to date copies of ATBs, TRIs and Manager’s Notes for your new aircraft, prior to, or during the course for up to date data on your new aircraft.

Step 1: Once you receive this ‘Welcome Letter’ you can begin your Ground School LMS Courseware Modules. We fully encourage you to begin the LMS Courseware ahead of time, so that once ground school comes along you will be well prepared; the System CBT Modules can take up to 45 hrs to complete. This extra time will also account for any IT issues and or errors you may encounter.

The Ground School LMS Courseware Modules can be found within Air Canada Flight Operations online Training System, ACU LMS.

You can gain access to the LMS through the AC Aeronet: AC Aeronet >> My Flight Ops >> Training >> ACU LMS. Please review this launch page for Fleet Specific information, and once you are ready to login to the LMS to complete your training please login to the following:

LMS Login: All Fleet SKV Exam’s and general modules are located in the LMS. The A320 and EMJ System CBT Modules are also located here.

No login is required; you should be automatically logged into the LMS.

CPaT Login: All B767/ B777/ B787 and A330 System CBT Modules are located on the CPaT LMS. Please make sure you login to the LMS to complete your general modules and the SKV Exam.

Once you have registered, you can start the module by clicking on the ‘Start’ button; the modules will naturally fall off your ‘To do’ list once they are completed.

Completing all of your Courseware Modules is a requirement in order to complete your ground school; all Courseware Modules are required to be completed prior to your PV Session at the end of Ground School.

If you have completed a module and would like to review it for reference purposes, you can access the modules from within your respective Fleet Reference ‘Catalogue’; Please review The eGuide for further information on access the ‘Catalogue’.

The last component for completion of your Ground School portion of the LMS is the System Knowledge Validation (SKV Exam), which is also completed from within the LMS. You should only attempt the SKV Exam once all System CBT Modules have been completed.

All pilots are expected to receive a grade greater than 80% for all online exams and quizzes in order to receive a completion status for that module and the course.

Step 2: Once you have completed your Ground School LMS Courseware Modules (System CBT Modules , SKV Exam etc.), you are required to print out a copy of your ‘Training Transcript’ and present it to your ground school instructor, as proof that you have completed the LMS Portion of ground school; this is to be completed prior to your PV session. For information on how to access and print out your ‘Training Transcript’ please review The eGuide.

Please refer to the attached document for Fleet Specific LMS eLearning Courseware access and Computer Configuration.

CBT – Update

A friend who’s just finished his CBT for the 787 took 26 hours to complete. I’d like to reiterate that the intent is to cover the basics and not spend 50 hours studying. The intent is to finish it before the course. The more in-depth studying will take place the night before your EIPT (Procedural Trainer) session using the appropriate manuals. As for myself, I’m at 21 hours and counting…
